Looking for somewhere to take the kids for a weekend trip? Cambridge is one of the best cities in the UK for a family escape.
It’s especially great for older children. The city is full of ancient history — and with a unique English charm, you just don’t experience in larger cities like London.
Punting on the River Cam
Many who visit Cambridge think punting isn’t a suitable activity for those with kids. But they’re wrong — and the kids love it!
In fact, if you’re looking for fun family activities in Cambridge, punting should be at the top of your list.
A punt is a flat-bottomed boat, propelled along the river by a long pole. Their history dates back to the early 1900s — and it remains one of the best ways to enjoy the famous River Cam.
There are a variety of companies to choose from, and you can either hire your own punt or opt for a guided tour.

The Cambridge Science Centre
Inquisitive young minds will love spending an afternoon at the Cambridge Science Centre.
With plenty of hands-on activities, the centre was set up to inspire children’s interest in all things science.
The staff here are what really makes the experience so special. Dedicated to making science fun, their energy and enthusiasm are bound to rub off on both older and younger kids alike.
Cycle to Waterbeach
Cambridge has some of the best cycle routes to enjoy as a family. The trip down the River Cam to Waterbeach is our personal favourite.
At 6.5 miles, it’s not too long for little legs — and it’s mostly off-road. The scenery is incredible. We recommend taking a picnic with you to enjoy somewhere along the way.
Once you arrive in Waterbeach, you can either decide to cycle back or hop on the train if the cycle there has taken its toll on your youngest family members.
The Farmland Museum and Denny Abbey
Suitable for children of all ages, the Farmland Museum and Denny Abbey are not to be missed. Adults can learn about the fascinating history of Denny Abbey, whilst the kids can get stuck in with the interactive exhibits in the museum.
Once you’ve finished exploring, there’s also an impressive play area — so the kids can burn off the rest of their energy before you head back into the city.
Cherry Hinton Hall Park
Are you looking for somewhere to enjoy a chilled out summer’s day? Do you want to escape the crowds of the city to do something a bit more relaxing? Head to Cherry Hinton Hall Park.
Plenty of open space, a climbing park and a paddling pool — it’s the perfect spot to spend an afternoon lounging around, enjoying each other’s company.
Whatever you’re looking for from your weekend away with the kids, there’s something for everyone in Cambridge.

The Imperial War Museum
Do you have a history or aeroplane buff in your ranks? Make sure you check out the Imperial War Museum.
The museum covers the history of RAF Duxford — with huge hangars filled with some of the most iconic aircraft. For example, the kids can marvel at a real WWII Spitfire during a visit to this remarkable attraction.
As there are flight demonstrations taking place throughout the day, it can get a little noisy in the museum. If you have young children with you, or those sensitive to loud noises, it might be worth bringing along some ear defenders just in case.
