Back during the lockdown, I took the boys for a walk along the Brampton Valley Way. The walk took us through fields of horses and throughout the whole walk, my 3-year-old repeatedly asked if we could go for a ride on one of them!
We couldn’t of course so when I was offered the opportunity to review this ride-on horse toy I jumped at the chance!
what is the PonyCycle ride on horse?…
PonyCycle is a mechanical ride-on horse that you operate by pushing down on the pedals. There are no batteries or electrical power so it’s a great way for kids to get some physical activity!
what size should i get?…
I knew that each of my boys (ages, 8, 6 and 3) would want a turn so I got the medium size as this is designed for 4 – 9-year-olds (the small size for 3 – 5year olds). My 3 years olds legs are only around 53cm so I thought he might struggle to reach the pedals. Because of this, I also got some Pedal pads which are available to buy separately. These add an extra 3cm height to the pedals so he could easily join in the fun. Turns out he could ride the pony without the pads but adding them made it a lot easier for him. With their long legs, the older two moved the horse with ease.
As a guide, if your child’s leg length is less than 50cm then you will want the small. If their leg length is longer then get the larger size. If they’re on the cusp then I would get the larger and get the pedal pads so you get as much use out of it as possible!
ride on horse safety features…
The ride-on horse has a number of safety features such as a brake and one-way wheels. The brake is similar to that on a bike, you simply squeeze it towards the handlebar. The wheels are also scratch-resistant so safe to use on wooden floors. The PonyCycle can also be ridden on the carpet.
To add to the fun of the PonyCycle there is also a sound button that plays the noise of a galloping horse. The button for the soundbox is located behind the horses’ ear so can easily be reached while riding.
There are a variety of different ride-ons available. There was also a zebra, a unicorn and a lighter brown horse.
