Lately, Hudson has been really into helping me to cook the dinner. He gets out his chopping board, a plastic knife and I give him a couple of bits of vegetable to cut. He also loves to bake a cake, and after helping pour the ingredients in the bowl, stir it together and flick half of it around the kitchen, he then sets up a chair in front of the oven and watches it bake!
Last month, I came across Little Cooks who provide baking kits aimed at children aged 3 -10 years. It sounded perfect for Hudson so I ordered one up and we gave it a go. Read on to hear what we thought about it.
what is the Little Cooks baking kit?…
The Little Cooks baking kit is a box that contains:
- All the organic dry ingredients for a healthy bake.
- A recipe card
- Record Book – for your little cook to record all the healthy bakes they make.
- A collectable sticker to add to their book.
- There are also some fun extras included that teach children to grow their own food, learn about sustainability and mindfulness through fun engaging activities!
- Table talk cards
- An additional recipe for a savoury dish (you do not get the ingredients for this).
what was in our kit?…
Specifically, in our kit, we had the ingredients for a Lemon Layer Slice. As I mentioned, all the dry ingredients are included, the only things we needed to add were milk, water, honey or maple syrup, butter or coconut oil, and 2 lemons.
We also received a Little Cooks recipe card for Shepherd Pie Jacket Potatoes, we haven’t made this yet as we are back on HelloFresh but will do it soon.
There was a record book and sticker for Hudson. He is too young to do this himself so I filled it in for him but he was able to stick his sticker inside.
We also received 3 table talk cards. These each have a question on them to spark conversation around the dinner table which is a lovely idea. There was also a poster to complete with ’10 things I’d like to try this year’, ‘3 places I’d like to visit’, and other inspirational ideas.
Also included in the kit was a pair of willow wands. I absolutely loved these. If you haven’t come across them before then they are 2 sticks that grow into Willow trees. They don’t look like much when you get them, but after only 1 -2 weeks of sitting in water, they are already growing roots and shoots! These have been a great way to teach Hudson about nature with very little effort!
what makes the kits healthy?…
All the ingredients in the kit are organic. Any ingredient that is needed for sweetening, a healthier, more natural alternative such as honey or maple syrup is used. The lemon layer slice we made included ingredients such as flaxseeds, agar-agar, pitted dates, and sunflower seeds. It was really interesting to try out ingredients that we wouldn’t normally use.
little cooks rewards…
To encourage and reward your child for their culinary efforts, Little Cooks also has a reward scheme in place! Once your child reaches their 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th kit they will receive a badge and certificate. Additionally, when they reach their 4th level and have completed their record book, they will get a free box with a special gift!
how do you get a Little Cooks box?…
Little Cooks boxes are run on a flexible subscription. There is the option to sign up on a 1, 3, 6, or 12-month plan. They are also available to order as a gift. You get the same subscription options plus you can choose what day you would like the box to be delivered.
At the bottom of the ‘What’s Inside’ page, you can see ahead to what the recipe next month will be, and if it’s something you are not keen on then you can simply skip that month.
