I have always been curious about HelloFresh. A couple of my friends have tried and loved it but I wasn’t sure if it was for me. I’m not a fan of cooking and a little guilty of just throwing together a Dolmio spaghetti bolognese or chicken nuggets in the oven out of laziness.
Therefore, when I was given the opportunity to try a HelloFresh Family box I couldn’t resist!
so what is HelloFresh…
HelloFresh is a meal subscription service. You choose how many meals you would like and for how many people. It’s 100% flexible so you can pause, cancel or just skip the odd week whenever you like.
There are 4 different types of boxes to choose from. Each box can be customised to be for 2, 3 or 4 people They can also have 3, 4 or 5 recipes. The different box types are:
- Meat & Veggies
- Quick – Meals that are ready in 20 minutes or less
The box gets delivered to your door at your prearranged time. Inside are all the ingredients plus recipe cards to make your chosen amount of meals. The only things you may need to add are the oil or butter for cooking and perhaps some other pantry items.
On opening my HelloFresh box I found 4 brown paper bags. These contained the main bulk of my ingredients and then the meat and dairy were separate in a cooler bag. The 4 bags are colour coded to the recipe cards so you know which one to use for each meal.
Packaging has obviously been considered as it is all reusable, recyclable, or biodegradable. Plus, only the food you need for each recipe is sent so there is little to no waste.
Each recipe card is packed full of information to make it suitable for even a beginner cook. The card also contains a list of ingredients, the prep and cooking time, utensils you will need, the nutrition information, and an image of the finished meal.
who is HelloFresh suited for?…
To be honest, it is suitable for anyone. What did keep coming into my mind was how great it will be in those first few weeks (or months!) of having a baby. Being due with my third in December I’m getting very conscious of how time poor my life will be again. It takes away the effort and time of having to think about, plan meals and shop for your ingredients. But still lets you have the control of putting together a meal, and the satisfaction of creating something fresh and delicious from scratch.
The first step for all my recipes was getting the herbs and vegetables chopped up. I love this as it means you don’t get halfway through something cooking in the pan and suddenly realise you need to peel and chop 3 carrots! Also, when my first two where babies I used to sometimes do the meal prep in the afternoon This way I knew I was prepared come dinner time if the baby became needy.
As a Mum, it’s not just those initial newborn weeks that can get hectic and time-poor. With kids, we sometimes have those weeks on the calendar that are just jam-packed. Those weeks full of after school activities, working late, or perhaps one of your little ones is unwell. That’s where it can be a saviour to preorder HelloFresh. You then have one less stress out of the week.
what was my experience with HelloFresh like?…
The meals you receive in the family box won’t be fancy gourmet meals but instead humble, comfort meals that you most probably cook anyway. This also means that kids will like them too. My eldest is very fussy and he happily gave each meal a go (WIN!!!)
That said, they are not just plain and boring. The meals that were included in my HelloFresh box were:
- Crumbed Chicken & Sweet Potato Mash with Parsley – Butter Sauce
- Sweet & Soy Pork Noodles with Crunchy Vegetables
- Cheesy Baked Mexican Pie with Tortilla Crust
- Sweet Mustard Chicken & Baked Rice with Lemon and Nutty Greens
In regards to the ingredients that I received, I was really impressed with how fresh they were. The meat is all ethically sourced and everything seems top quality. When I got to the 4th meal I was worried I was going to open the bag to brown, wilted produce but it all still looked great.
My boys are young and don’t eat much so we did have a lot of leftover food. This is great if you are happy to eat leftovers the next day (Again, ideal if you have a newborn at home) but also great if your kids are older and have bigger appetites. I reckon the family box meals could easily feed 4 adults with no one left hungry.
any downsides to HelloFresh?…
There weren’t many downsides to the experience. If I really had to be picky then I guess I would say… The butter was measured in cups rather than weight – silly I know, it’s just one of my pet hates.
Overall, I loved the experience. While it is something I personally wouldn’t use 7 days a week, 365 days a year I am definitely tempted for when the new baby arrives, for those weeks that are just plain busy or I’m just feeling lazy.
lastly, the all-important question… how much does it cost?…
I have actually written a whole post on whether HelloFresh Saves You Money. The Family box I tried works out at about £3.83 per meal which I think is very reasonable.
HelloFresh currently have an offer at the moment where you can save 50% in total over your 4 deliveries, including free shipping on the first box! To take advantage of this offer simply click here and follow the instructions.
I hope you enjoy the meals as much as I did!
