One way to get the kids out and about for free is to go and feed the ducks! It’s also a great way to get them connecting to nature and sparking their interest in birds and nature.
We have a number of beautiful spots around Northamptonshire to feed ducks. One thing to note though, is not to feed them bread! Further down in the post I will share some other, healthier ideas of what you can feed them instead.

Abington park is a great spot for a picnic. There is plenty of open grassed area, an area shaded by the trees, play areas, plenty of room to kick a ball around and the ice cream truck. If you head across the road to the other part of the park then you can enjoy the cafe and museum.
Sywell Country Park
There is plenty to do at Sywell country park and feeding the ducks is always a favourite. Take a walk around the reservoir, enjoy one of the 3 play areas, or get a bite to eat in the cafe.

There are various types of birds and ducks that live on Corby boating lake. Take a picnic, play in the adventure playground and then feed the ducks.
Daventry Country Park
Along the edge of the reservoir, you can feed the ducks and geese using the food available to buy in the cafe. Daventry country park also has a great play area for kids of all ages.
East Carlton Country Park
East Carlton also has bags of duck food available to buy and a pretty duck pond at the bottom of the hill. There is a gift shop to browse, walks around the woods and a cafe to buy some lunch.
The Embankment, Wellingborough
There are always swans along the Embankment. There is a hot drinks van parked up, on a hot day there is often an ice cream van and on really hot days the splash park opens!
Can I feed ducks bread?
Although the odd bit of bread isn’t going to hurt a duck, you should avoid feeding it to them. Bread has no nutritional value and leaves a duck feeling full. If a duck has eaten bread it won’t eat the actual food it needs.
What can I feed ducks?
Luckily there are lots of easy alternatives to bread. Other ideas of what you can feed ducks are :
- seedless grapes – cut in half
